A trio of small vases, hand thrown and trimmed and twice reduction fired to cone ten, (1290ºC) in my gas kiln, made using a high-iron stoneware clay body that has started to burn through the glass, creating small droplets of iridescence. After the first firing the pots interiors were coated with black iron oxide, then they were fired again, melting this into a metallic sheen that coats the interior.

PLEASE NOTE, these are decorative pieces due to it being reduction fired a number of times. They are inherently weaker objects, so should be washed by hand and kept out of a microwave and whilst the iron surface is very molten and fluxed, it could leach, so if used, please keep it for trinkets or perhaps very dry-foods. There are minute fissures, cracks that traverse certain parts of the glazed surface, but like my normal crackle glazes, these don’t go through the clay body itself. These iron-clad pots are my attempt at turning pots that were seconds back into firsts and the pictures do no justice to the iridescent surfaces they have, especially when placed in the right light

These pots are dishwasher safe and food safe, although please take care, washing by hand is the best option. All my pots are made with a high iron content clay body that is heavily reduction fired. This means that sharper edges can be susceptible to chipping if they’re bashed so please handle your pots with care. I personally always hand wash my handmade pottery and tend not to use them in microwaves. Remember, this isn’t mass produced factory ceramics, each pot is individual. Additionally, crackle glazes like this can stain naturally overtime with liquids such as tea or coffee. The pots themselves are highly vitrified and there’s nothing toxic or dangerous that can leach out from the crackle glazes. This is simply a byproduct of having such surfaces and you’ll find that crackle glazes, or crazing like this, can appear in wood fired pots, soda fired pots and salt fired wares too.
