Angular vase, dark green feldspathic crackle glaze with black iron oxide interior (15)

£800.00

Dimensions: 20 H x 13.8 W

A hand thrown and trimmed angular vase, made using a high iron clay body and coated in a dark green feldspathic crackle glaze before being reduction fired to cone ten, (1290ºC). I wasn’t happy with the initial glazing, thus, in order to save the piece I coated the interior with a layer of black iron oxide, then I fired it a second time, resulting in this red, metallic surface that covers the inside shape.

PLEASE NOTE, these are decorative pieces due to it being reduction fired a number of times. They are inherently weaker objects, so should be washed by hand and kept out of a microwave and whilst the iron surface is very molten and fluxed, it could leach, so if used, please keep it for trinkets or perhaps very dry-foods. There are minute fissures, cracks that traverse certain parts of the glazed surface, but like my normal crackle glazes, these don’t go through the clay body itself. These iron-clad pots are my attempt at turning pots that were seconds back into firsts and the pictures do no justice to the iridescent surfaces they have, especially when placed in the right light.

These pots are dishwasher safe and food safe, although please take care, washing by hand is the best option. All my pots are made with a high iron content clay body that is heavily reduction fired. This means that sharper edges can be susceptible to chipping if they’re bashed so please handle your pots with care. I personally always hand wash my handmade pottery and tend not to use them in microwaves. Remember, this isn’t mass produced factory ceramics, each pot is individual. Additionally, crackle glazes like this can stain naturally overtime with liquids such as tea or coffee. The pots themselves are highly vitrified and there’s nothing toxic or dangerous that can leach out from the crackle glazes. This is simply a byproduct of having such surfaces and you’ll find that crackle glazes, or crazing like this, can appear in wood fired pots, soda fired pots and salt fired wares too.
