Lidded forms made from new crimson clay and glazes, tests, but successful ones. Hand thrown and trimmed from a mix of stoneware bodies, crimson and a high iron clay-type and coated in a red glaze that fires to a vibrant tone. Reduction fired to cone ten, (1290ºC), over an eight hour period to the point where the clay is almost collapsing, hence the very subtle undulations in the rim from where the clay softened at peak temperatures. These have been part of a journey of mine in the search for new surfaces and they make for a welcome change in comparison to all the greens, blues and whites seen in the rest of my palette.
These pots are dishwasher safe and food safe, although please take care, washing by hand is the best option. All my pots are made with a high iron content clay body that is heavily reduction fired. This means that sharper edges can be susceptible to chipping if they’re bashed so please handle your pots with care. I personally always hand wash my handmade pottery and tend not to use them in microwaves. Remember, this isn’t mass produced factory ceramics, each pot is individual. Additionally, crackle glazes like this can stain naturally overtime with liquids such as tea or coffee. The pots themselves are highly vitrified and there’s nothing toxic or dangerous that can leach out from the crackle glazes. This is simply a byproduct of having such surfaces and you’ll find that crackle glazes, or crazing like this, can appear in wood fired pots, soda fired pots and salt fired wares too.
